Swimmer Luana Alonso has broken her silence on claims she was asked to leave the Olympic Village after creating an “inappropriate atmosphere”.
The Paraguayan athlete took to Instagram on Monday to “clarify” what had happened, amid reports as to her reason for leaving Paris.
The 20-year-old had previously failed to qualify in the 100-meters butterfly in the heat last week.
Alongside a picture of a sunset, Alonso hit out at the “lies” in view of her 643,000 followers.
She wrote in Spanish: “I just wanted to clarify that I was never kicked out or expelled from anywhere, please stop spreading false information.
“I don’t want to make any statement but I’m not going to let lies affect me either.”
Paraguay’s Olympic chief Larissa Schaerer previously released a statement which read: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.
“We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the athletes’ village.”
Athletes can decide whether to stay in the Village, which accommodates more than 14,000 competitors.
No further information was given on what the alleged behaviour was, with Alonso seemingly then returning to the US.
The star, who is studying at Dallas University in Texas, shared a video which seemingly saw her approaching border control.
Alonso narrowly missed on the semi-finals after placing sixth, 0.24 seconds behind Georgia’s Ana Nizharadze.
On July 28, she sensationally announced her retirement from the sport, writing on the picture sharing app: “Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more.
“I gave you part of my life and I don’t change it for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry them in my heart, unique opportunities.
“It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon.”
