California may soon support digital IDs in Apple's Wallet app

US

California could soon announce support for its digital identification cards in Apple’s Wallet app, according to multiple reports.

The state’s decision to support digital identification cards in the Wallet app came after it tested its own proprietary app to house digital IDs.

DMW employees are currently testing the Apple Wallet support while government officials work to build landing pages for functionality ahead of its public launch, according to 9to5 Mac, a publication that covers all things related to Apple.

No release date has been announced yet.

Last year, the state announced that the public can sign up to have their identification card downloaded onto their phone. Currently, the free app works on both iOS and Android devices, and users can register remotely by scanning their license through the DMV’s wallet app.

Only five states — Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland and Ohio — support the Wallet app feature.

Apple has previously said that Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Utah pledged their commitment to supporting digital IDs in the Wallet app.

It’s unclear whether the digital ID feature would also be supported on wallet apps for Android phones.

KTLA reached out to the DMV but didn’t hear back in time for publication.
