Snack Recall As Fatal Warning Issued

US

A snack product is being recalled as it may contain a bacterium that can cause food poisoning.

California based Thal Golden Spices Inc is recalling one of its snack products as it may be contaminated with salmonella, which can sometimes cause serious and fatal infections in some people.

“Thal Golden Spices Inc recently discovered an oversight in the distribution process of one of our products. Unfortunately, the product was released without proper lab results,” a statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website reads. “This issue came to light during an FDA inspection when inspectors identified discrepancies in the batch numbers slated for destruction. We are actively addressing this situation to ensure compliance and rectify the error.”

GETTY

In total, 640 bags of the product that were distributed in California only are being recalled. No illnesses have been confirmed in relation to this recall so far, and consumers who have purchased an affected item are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The Cleveland Clinic reports that more than 1 million people in the U.S. contract salmonella every year. Symptoms often include abdominal cramping, diarrhea, headaches and fever, which can begin anywhere from six hours to six days after exposure. These infections are usually mild, and most people recover within a few days without needing medical treatment.

However, for some groups it can pose a serious risk, including people under 12 months old, over 65 years old or with weakened immune systems.

In rare cases, salmonella can enter the bloodstream, leading to severe conditions—such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis—that may require a stay in hospital.

“These foodborne illnesses are dangerous in that they can have severe health impacts on people, including vomiting, diarrhea, fever and, in severe cases, brain infections and blood infections,” Michelle Anstey, a food safety expert from NSF, a public health and safety organization, told Newsweek. “They can be especially dangerous for those who are immunocompromised, including pregnant women, children and older adults.”

Anyone with concerns about the product can call Thal Golden Spices Inc. at 510-429-1797 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
