There is much speculation as to who Kamala Harris will pick as her running mate for the 2024 Presidential election, but one elected official in Pennsylvania caused confusion on Friday when she posted a video seemingly announcing Harris’ pick for vice president.
In a social media post on Friday, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said that she and many other leaders from the Philly area are “proud” to support Kamala Harris in her presidential campaign.
The post – a video featuring local union leaders and elected officials praising Harris – also implied that current Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro had joined the Democratic ticket.
“Proud to be back with so many leaders from across our region supporting @KamalaHarris for President and @JoshShapiroPA for VP!” the post’s caption read.
As of Saturday morning, Harris had not selected a running mate; Shapiro is believed to be in the running for VP along with multiple other Democrat leaders including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Arizona).
A representative from Mayor Cherelle Parker’s camp speaking on condition of anonymity told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the post was “not an announcement of anything,” and was rather a gesture of “support for a longtime friend who [she knows] is one of the people being considered.”
Bucks County, Pennsylvania County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia, who was featured in the video, told the Inquirer that she was “surprised” to see the post on Friday but thought it was “fun” and agreed with the message promoting Shapiro as Vice President.
