Man turns himself in while police investigate Long Beach stabbing death

US

A 21-year-old man turned himself in to police Thursday afternoon in connection with a deadly stabbing in Long Beach.

Police say Jonathan Sandoval admitted to attacking two people inside a home on the 800 block of Cherry Avenue, including one man who died from stab wounds.

Officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to the residence just before 4 p.m. and found 41-year-old Cristian Varguez suffering from a stab wound to the upper body.

Varguez was transported to a local hospital and was listed as being in stable but critical condition, but ultimately died from his wounds.

While officers were investigating the scene, Sandoval entered the Long Beach Police Department Public Safety Building and voluntarily turned himself in for the crime.

He was taken into custody to await charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators have determined that Sandoval was involved in a physical altercation with Varguez and a second victim, identified only as an adult male. That altercation escalated and Sandoval allegedly retrieved a knife and a pair of brass knuckles, stabbing Varguez and striking the other victim.

The second victim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Police say Sandoval knew both men and the attack was not random.

Sandoval’s bail is currently set at $2 million and a court date has not yet been set.

The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges will be filed.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Eric Thai or Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips can be provided online or by calling 800-222-8477.
