‘Wordle’ #1,141, Clues, Hints and Today’s Answer, Saturday, August 3 Game

US

Wordle first hit our screens in 2021—and almost three years later its popularity shows no signs of slowing down.

New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle invented the daily word game for his crossword-loving partner, Palek Shah.

The concept of Wordle is simple enough. Players must guess a secret five-letter word within six attempts or less. A color-coded tile system provides feedback to help you along the way.

A green tile indicates the correct letter in the correct position, while a yellow tile signifies the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.

Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia of The New York Times which bought the game in 2022— analyzed 515 million Wordle games and found that one of the most popular first-word choices was “Adieu.” However, although it was in the top 30 most-used starting words, it was actually not that helpful in solving the daily puzzle.

“The strategy seems to make sense: Figure out the vowels, and the other letters will fall into place,” wrote Katz and Bhatia. “Our new analysis, though, shows that starting with ADIEU or AUDIO does actually put human players at a disadvantage.”

They continued: “On average, players who started with ADIEU needed about a third of a turn more to solve their Wordles compared with players who started with SLATE, adding up to 132 extra turns over the course of a year.”

WordsRated also crunched some numbers and found the most common starting letter for all Wordle-eligible words is S, with 15.81 percent of answers beginning with it.

The word game Wordle is shown on a mobile phone on January 12, 2022 in Houston, Texas. The online word game Wordle went viral after initially gaining momentum in October of 2021.

The next most common starting letter is C, with 8.58 percent of Wordle answers starting with the consonant, although S is the starting letter for 167 more words than its nearest rival. B is in third place with 7.49 percent.
