Two mosquito trap samples test positive for West Nile virus in Georgetown

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two positive tests for West Nile were detected in Georgetown, and the city will spray Friday and Saturday evening, according to a news release.

Truck-mounted spraying is scheduled near Pinnacle Park in southeast Georgetown and close to Emerald Springs Park near Williams Drive and Wagon Wheel Trail.

While the spray does not propose a significant health risk, people and pets may want to stay inside during the spraying, the release said.

Health officials also recommend draining standing water, using insect repellent and dressing in long sleeves and pants when outside, the release said

West Nile in Hays County

Just last week, a person in Hays County tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Hays County Health Department.

The county said this was the first reported human case for the 2024 season.

Hays County said it would continue conducting mosquito pool traps and health surveillance to promote health and safety.

Severe cases of West Nile virus

According to the Texas Department of State Health Service (DSHS), three out of nine reported human cases of West Nile virus experienced a severe case of West Nile virus — which is known as West Nile neuroinvasive disease.

Symptoms of West Nile neuroinvasive disease to look for are listed below:

  • headache
  • high fever
  • neck stiffness
  • stupor
  • disorientation
  • coma
  • tremors
  • convulsions
  • muscle weakness
  • paralysis.
