HOUSTON (Nexstar) — The crowds congregating at Houston’s Fallbrook Church Thursday morning are a testament to the legacy Houston giant Sheila Jackson Lee left across her city and her country.

Among the notable guests attending the late Congresswoman’s Celebration of Life: Vice President Kamala Harris, Bill and Hillary Clinton, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Beto O’Rourke, and hundreds of leaders in the Houston community. Oprah sent flowers.

Jackson Lee spent nearly three decades serving downtown and North Houston in Congress and was known for her dedication to civil rights issues in her largely African-American district. In June, she announced she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She died on July 19.

Nexstar’s Ryan Chandler and Monica Madden are attending the service. Follow along on X @RyanChandlerTV and @themonicamadden. We’ll bring you updates as they unfold and a full report on the air this evening.
