An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was killed in a shootout early Tuesday during an attempted robbery at a Woodlawn neighborhood gas station on the South Side.

Around 1:25 a.m., the deputy, a 31-year-old man, was at a gas station in the 500 block of East 67th Street when someone approached him and tried to rob him, sparking an argument, Chicago police and the Cook County sheriff’s office said.

A shootout ensued and the deputy was shot in the chest, police said. As he attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, he slammed into a pole in the 6700 block of South Indiana Avenue, police said.

The unidentified deputy was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

“Sheriff’s office staff are with the Deputy’s family as well as with the Sheriff’s Office team to provide support and resources as they navigate this senseless tragedy,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

No one was in custody.
