Two drivers arrested in suspected DUI crash that killed four people identified

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two drivers arrested in a suspected driving under the influence crash that resulted in four deaths on a major freeway in the Kearny Mesa area were identified, authorities said.

Aleim Alavez Garcia, 24, and Edward Frederick Poss, 32, were arrested on suspicion of DUI of alcohol and/or drugs, Salvador Castro with the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday.

The collision occurred Friday around 1:28 a.m. on state Route 163 southbound at Interstate 805. A Toyota Tacoma, driven by Alavez-Garcia, crashed into the back of a Toyota Prius, causing four occupants of the Prius to be ejected.

Another Prius, driven by Poss, traveled through the debris field of the first crash and hit an unknown object, according to authorities.

The passengers inside the Prius — four men aged 23, 24, 26 and 27– that was hit from behind suffered major injuries. Two of them were confirmed dead at the scene while the other two died at the hospital, per CHP.

Alavez Garcia and Poss were also taken to the hospital for medical clearance and booked into San Diego County Jail on multiple charges.

The names of the victims in the crash have not been released at this time.
