Netflix announces three-part documentary about Karen Read saga

Netflix will release a three-part documentary limited series about the Karen Read saga, the streaming giant announced on Friday.

The series will follow the events leading up to Boston police officer John O’Keefe’s death, Netflix said. The yet-untitled series does not yet have a release date.

Karen Read made national headlines throughout a highly publicized, controversial murder that ended in a mistrial earlier this summer. Prosecutors claimed Read, a 44 year-old professor, intentionally backed her car into O’Keefe, her boyfriend, and left him to die. Read’s defense attorneys claimed she was framed, putting forward a theory of an elaborate coverup by law enforcement.

After a weeklong deliberation, the jury declared they could not come to a verdict and Judge Beverly Cannone declared a mistrial July 1. Prosecutors have said they plan to retry the case.

In the announcement about the series, Netflix said the case has “inspired plenty of conversation.”

“It is a case that has garnered a huge amount of public attention and has far-reaching implications,” co-directors Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller said in the announcement. “We are also mindful that this is a hugely sensitive case and we are determined to treat all those involved with the respect and consideration they deserve.”
