Chicago's biggest burrito busting bellies in Bridgeport

CHICAGO — A burrito as big as a baby. That’s what one Mexican market on Chicago’s South Side is cooking up.

Rudy Martinez owns Martinez Supermarket, a family-owned grocery store and restaurant in Bridgeport at 3301 South Morgan in Bridgeport. He created the “big baby burrito.” 

“It’s close to about two feet,” he said. “It takes about 15 to 20 minutes if we’re not busy.”

Two specially-made, overlapping flour tortillas are connected by a bed of shredded cheese, topped with heaps of seared, spiced and sliced skirt steak.

 “It comes with beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, cilantro, sour cream,” Martinez said.

All of the ingredients are piled in proper proportions, topped with lettuce and cheese.

Then it takes a tandem to roll and fold the stuffed tortillas, like blankets swaddling a newborn baby.

 “That’s why I call it a baby. You can just grab it like a baby,” Martinez said. “Otherwise, it will fall apart on you, so you got to be careful how you grab it.”

It weighs seven pounds and measures almost two feet.

It’s as big as an arm, and costs a leg but customers say the big baby burrito is worth ordering.
