Michelle Obama Fans Beg Her to Replace Joe Biden: ‘Save Our Country’

US

Fans of former first lady Michelle Obama have urged her to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party‘s nominee in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Obama, whose husband is former President Barack Obama, has never run for public or expressed an interest in becoming president—but there has been frequent speculation about a potential White House run.

Some social media users responded to a recent Facebook video Obama shared by calling on her to enter the presidential race. The comments come as President Biden has been under increasing pressure to step aside as the Democratic nominee following a lackluster performance during his June 27 presidential debate with former President Donald Trump.

Biden has said he will stay in the race and he continues to enjoy the support of prominent Democrats.

Obama posted a video on her Facebook page on July 3 in support of the Girls Opportunity Alliance, which supports girls in Chicago. The video was met with comments asking her to enter the race.

Newsweek has reached out to the office of Barack and Michelle Obama via their website for comment.

“Mrs Obama you could take Joe Biden’s place in the presidential election,” one reply said. That comment received 120 reactions from other users, including 81 likes and 31 heart reactions, though not all the reactions were positive. Six users used a laughing emoji in response to the suggestion.

“Dear Michelle Obama, please if you have it in your heart, run for president,” one Facebook user wrote. “Joe has done what he can, but we the people are desperate to have a leader that will save our country. I humbly ask that you consider it. If only for 4 years, which is a lot, we the people would be so grateful.”

While the comment received 16 likes and 9 heart reactions, it also received three laughing reactions and one shocked face. However, other fans of the former first lady expressed similar sentiments.

“Please Michelle, save our country! I’ll vote for Joe if he runs, but please consider running in his place. He’s done a great job serving our country for years. But i think we need you now!” wrote another Facebook user.

“Please run for president. I feel like you are the hope of our nation and democracy,” another Obama fan said.

However, not everyone reacting to Obama’s video was supportive of the idea, with one user writing: “Mrs Obama doesn’t need to run for President. She needs to help this one win. The Democratic Party needs to win.”

An Obama bid to replace Biden is remote as the former first lady has expressed no interest in running for office and the Democrats plan to nominate the president before their convention in August.

A DNC spokesperson told Newsweek this week that it will continue with its plan to hold a virtual roll call to formally nominate Biden before August 7.
