Former Los Angeles Dodgers star Raúl Mondesi was sentenced to six years and nine months in jail in a corruption case involving his time as a local mayor in the Dominican Republic.
Prosecutors say Mondesi, 53, embezzled $5 million while mayor of San Cristobal between 2010 and 2016, ESPN reported.
His sentence, announced on Friday following a plea deal, also carries a $507,000 fine.
Mondesi played 13 seasons in Major League Baseball, half in Los Angeles, where he won Rookie of the Year in 1994, was an All-Star in 1995 and won two Gold Gloves. He also appeared in eight games with the Los Angeles Angels late in his career.
Mondesi retired after the 2005 season and began his political career the following year.
Dominican prosecutors filed charges, including falsification of documents, criminal association and malfeasance against the former baseball slugger. He spent six years under house arrest, meaning his sentence has already been completed, ESPN reported.
Mondesi’s son, Adalberto, was on the Kansas City Royals’ 2015 World Series team and is currently a free agent.
