'Firecracker Open' shows off new improvements to Lions Municipal Golf Course

US

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Afternoon rains on Saturday put a halt on play at the 2024 Firecracker Open in Austin.

Despite that, dozens turned out for the annual classic held at Lions Municipal Golf Course.

That rain helped feed recently laid down grass at the new putting green. It’s one of several new improvements to the course that has a rich history in the city.

“We just opened up an 8,000-square-foot putting green that took the place of our small putting green that was 1,500 square feet,” said Scotty Sayers, the co-chair of The Muny Conservancy.

The course is a popular spot for people of all ages.

“It is the home course for 12 high school teams,” added Sayers.

The three-day tournament wraps up Sunday afternoon.
