Get ready for hot and sticky weather in NYC this weekend with a chance of rain

It’s going to be a hot and sticky weekend, with intermittent showers potentially developing into thunderstorms all weekend according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service.

The soup and storms start Friday until things dry out around Sunday, forecasters said.

Additionally, for anyone enjoying the weekend on the Rockaways or Long Island, the service has issued a high-risk warning for rip currents, extending from New York City to Suffolk county from Friday through Saturday evening.

“It’s dangerous to go into the water,” said meteorologist Joe Pollina. “To stay safe it’s best to stay out of the water, or to swim where the flags are or near a lifeguard.”

Meteorologist David Stark said the likely wet weather doesn’t mean you need to spend the entire weekend indoors.

“It doesn’t look like a complete washout by any means during the daytime,” Stark said. “It’s just something to keep an eye on, especially if there are any outdoor plans.”

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s, with rain expected to taper off by mid-day Sunday.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air-quality warning for New York City on Friday, perhaps due to lingering effects from fireworks.

With an air quality index at around 150, the city Department of Health recommends limiting outdoor activities to an hour or less.
