French Fire forces evacuations in Mariposa County

MARIPOSA — A raging wildfire forced evacuation in parts of Mariposa County on the Fourth of July.

The blaze broke out around 6:30 p.m. in the area of French Road and Highway 49 in Mariposa. As of 9:50 p.m., the fire had burned through 400 acres and was 0% contained, according to Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The following areas are under mandatory evacuation orders:

  • Hospital Road, from Silver Creek to the End
  • Grosjean Road
  • Alta Vista Road
  • Avoca Vale
  • Old Highway North, from Highway 140 to Wild Peach
  • Slaughterhouse Road

Evacuation warnings are also in place for the following areas:

  • Hospital Road
  • Smith Road, from Highway 140 to Hospital Road
  • Parts of Highway 140
  • Lakeview Road

Officials are asking people to stay out of the fire area. Multiple road closures are in place.

A temporary evacuation point is available at New Life Christian Church, located at 5089 Cole Road in Mariposa.
