Outdoors Bound: Tips for beginning hikers

US

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — With the Independence Day holiday approaching, more people will be taking to hiking trails around Virginia. For beginning hikers here are a few tips:

  • Let others know where and when you plan to hike
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Bring along at least two bottles of water
  • Bring snacks
  • Bring a first aid kit
  • Bring matches
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Wear shoes that are comfortable and suitable to walking on trails
  • Beginners start easy; walk the Roanoke Greenway or local Virginia State Parks trails

Hikers are also encouraged to plan their hikes for the periods between sunrise and 10:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m. and an hour before sunset. That way hikers can avoid the heat of the day, but have enough light to see the trail and enjoy the scenery.
