Powerful NJ political boss George Norcross accused of racketeering in sweeping indictment

US

George E. Norcross III, a powerful executive and political figure in New Jersey for decades, was indicted on Monday on racketeering charges alleging that he led a criminal enterprise that used extortion to promote his vast business, political and philanthropic empire, the state attorney general announced.

The indictment also charges his brother Philip Norcross — an equity partner at a law firm that does frequent business with government agencies — and former Camden Mayor Dana Redd in the alleged schemes. Also under indictment is Norcross’s longtime attorney, William Tambussi. Six people were in charged in all.

The charges stem from an investigation by the New Jersey attorney general’s office into land deals and tax breaks on the Camden waterfront. From 2012 to 2013, the Norcross brothers allegedly strong-armed the passage of state legislation tailored to their interests to obtain $1.1 billion in tax breaks to kickstart a massive redevelopment on the most valuable land in the impoverished city.

George Norcross is widely regarded as South Jersey’s most powerful political boss for the last 30 years. A third Norcross sibling, Donald Norcross, represents South Jersey in Congress.

George Norcross is also chairman of Cooper University Hospital, the largest employer in Camden and a major driver of downtown development. He owns Conner Strong & Buckelew, an insurance company that contracts with government entities across New Jersey.

The indictment has the potential to shake up New Jersey politics, where county political bosses wield power over local, county and statewide elected officials.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
