LOS ANGELES — Actor Dabney Coleman, who made a long career out of playing overbearing men like the sexist boss in “9 to 5,” has died at age 92.
He died at home in Santa Monica, his daughter told The Hollywood Reporter.
Coleman spent more than 50 years acting in film and television and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014.
He was nominated for multiple acting awards during his career, winning an Emmy, a Golden Globe and two Screen Actor Guild Awards.
It was his role as Mr. Hart the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” in “9 to 5” opposite Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin which perhaps gave him the greatest fame and led to other roles playing comedically obnoxious men, often in positions of authority.
Roles followed which included the lead in the sitcom “Buffalo Bill,” the role of a sexist TV director in the film “Tootsie” and Commodore Louis Kaestner in “Boardwalk Empire.”
His daughter told The Hollywood Reporter in his own life he stood in contrast to his characters as a generous man who “moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery.”
