String of arsons on South Side prompts warning from Chicago police

CHICAGO — Police are offering a warning to South Side residents after a string of arsons. 

Authorities say they are investigating five fires that were set between Wednesday, March 27, and Sunday, April 21, in the city’s Grand Crossing neighborhood. 

Officers say during each incident, someone intentionally set fires to trash receptacles in alleys in the neighborhood. The fires then spread to nearby homes and garages.

Chicago police provided the following list of times and locations where the fires were set:

  • 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue on Wednesday, March 27 at 11:11 p.m. Grand Crossing
  • 6800 block of South Michigan Avenue on Wednesday, March 27 at 1:01 a.m. Grand Crossing
  • 300 block of East 70th Street on Sunday, April 21 at 9:15 p.m. Grand Crossing
  • 6900 block of South Prairie Avenue on Sunday, April 21 at 9:45 p.m.
  • 300 block of East 70th Street on Sunday, April 21 at 9:45 p.m.

Officers were not able to provide details on a potential suspect. 

Police advised residents to remain aware of the situation and notify neighbors and friends who frequent the area about the arson string. 

Chicago police also advised residents to report any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity immediately. If surveillance video of the incidents is available, residents should make sure to save it for detectives.
