Crystal Lakes West washout: Beaver dam blamed for huge chunk of road that washed away during rainfall in Livingston neighborhood

LIVINGSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Officials say a beaver is to blame for a Livingston neighborhood’s main access road being washed away amid heavy rainfall, sparking a shelter-in-place.

Video shows damage to the roadway in the Crystal Lakes subdivision, just off U.S. Highway 190 East.

A massive chunk of Crystal Lakes West, which sits above a culvert, washed away, making it impassable for cars and even pedestrians.

According to Polk County Pct. 2, a beaver dam blocked a pipe in a culvert, causing flooding during heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The flooding loosened the dirt, causing the road to wash away.

Crystal Lakes West, the access road to the Crystal Lakes subdivision, was closed to vehicle and foot traffic amid weather Tuesday night.

Officials say they are bringing in a dump truck full of new dirt. Repairs are expected to take six to eight hours.

The Polk County Office of Emergency Management is asking residents on the westside of the neighborhood to shelter in place while a solution to the problem is being worked out. However, officials said there is another way in and out of the subdivision for residents who need to leave.

Polk County Pct. 4 Commissioner Jerry Cassity was in the neighborhood early Wednesday morning. He said he and other county officials planned to a meet to make a game plan about the repairs.

Residents in the neighborhood are urged to call 911 for any emergencies.

A woman living in the area told ABC13 that the subdivision holds about 60 homes.
