Authorities responded to Interstate 495 South Monday morning after a sinkhole opened up in Haverhill.

The sinkhole occurred just after Exit 106, State Police said on social media just after 10 a.m. Troopers from the Andover and Newbury barracks responded to the scene. The sinkhole was apparently caused by a water main break.

Those traveling through the area should expect the situation to have a “major impact” on traffic. Delays should be expected “through the Methuen-Haverhill corridor” and at the interchanges near Routes 213, 110, 97, and 125, officials said.

A real-time traffic map showed stop-and-go traffic backing up on I-495 South for about five miles before the sinkhole.
