NASCAR Spotter Calls Out Kamala Harris for Tweet Announcing $157 Million Lebanon Aid

US

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastation across six U.S. states, NASCAR spotter Eddie D’Hondt took to X to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris for announcing “nearly $157 million in additional assistance to the people of Lebanon.” D’Hondt hinted that her focus should be on aiding Americans in crisis before extending help to other nations.

Hurricane Helene struck the U.S. last week, marking the most powerful storm ever to hit Florida’s Big Bend region. It then continued its path toward Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. The devastation left in its wake is immense, with widespread destruction to both public and private properties and the tragic loss of hundreds of lives.

D’Hondt expressed frustration in response to the Vice President’s tweet, strongly stating, “This is wrong!” The tweet from Kamala Harris, dated 6 October 2024, stated:

“The people of Lebanon are facing an increasingly dire humanitarian situation. I am concerned about the security and well-being of civilians suffering in Lebanon and will continue working to help meet the needs of all civilians there.

“To that end, the United States will provide nearly $157 million in additional assistance to the people of Lebanon for essential needs such as food, shelter, water, protection, and sanitation to help those who have been displaced by the recent conflict. This additional support brings total U.S. assistance to Lebanon over the last year to over $385 million.”

D’Hondt, who works with Josh Berry of Stewart-Haas Racing, reacted to a quoted tweet from another account that criticized Kamala Harris for prioritizing aid to Lebanon while thousands of Americans continued to suffer. He wrote:

“It’s none of my business which side of the political fence u r on. That said, I [100%] respect everybody’s views & opinions, w 0 remorse. But, this is vehemently wrong on so many levels & that should be the view from both parties. We r amicably American’s. This is wrong! Come on!” [sic]

The NASCAR community has actively stepped up to provide aid and support to those impacted by the disaster, as reported on Newsweek Sports last week. Semi-retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle went to the extent of using his personal helicopter to supply essential items to people affected in remote areas.

Biffle was even nominated by ESPN analyst Marty Smith for the Presidential Medal of Freedom on social media for his heroic efforts. Smith wrote:

“Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle should receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his ongoing and ceaseless heroic efforts in western North Carolina, using his helicopter & coordinating w/ others to save lives. Go to @gbiffle to see his amazing effort. Thank you Greg.”

It is to be noted that Kamala Harris has been actively using X to highlight her ongoing efforts to support those impacted by Hurricane Helene. Below are some of the latest updates she has shared:
