AUSTIN (KXAN) — The college football world descended into chaos this weekend with several ranked teams going down, allowing the Texas Longhorns to regain the top spot in the Associated Press top 25 rankings while idle.
The latest rankings were released Sunday, and the Longhorns earned 52 first-place to move up from No. 2 after Vanderbilt sent shockwaves through the nation with a 40-35 win over former No. 1 Alabama. The Crimson Tide dropped six spots to No. 7 following the loss.
Texas will enter the Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma as the AP’s top-ranked team for the first time since 1965. The Sooners are ranked No. 18 this week. Texas is also No. 1 in the USA Today coaches poll.
Ohio State moved up a spot to take over No. 2 while Oregon and Penn State each moved up three places to Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Georgia held its position at No. 5.
Eighteen teams ranked in the previous AP poll played unranked teams and six lost. Tennessee lost to Arkansas, moving the Volunteers down four slots to No. 8, and Michigan dropped a Big 10 Conference game to Washington, sending the Wolverines tumbling down the poll 14 spots to No. 24.

Minnesota topped Southern California to send the Trojans from No. 11 to out of the rankings.
In the only matchup between two ranked teams Saturday, Texas A&M pounded Missouri 41-10. The win rocketed the Aggies from tied for No. 25 to No. 15 and dumped the Tigers from No. 9 to No. 21.
Clemson, led by former Westlake standout quarterback Cade Klubnik, moved up five spots to No. 9 and Iowa State also moved up five to No. 10.
Pitt and SMU entered the poll at Nos. 22 and 25.
