Saugus football game canceled after reported fight among parents

A fight between parents in the stands at a youth football game in Saugus led to a game being canceled, police told news outlets.

A Saugus youth football game was canceled after a fight broke out among people in the stands on Sunday, multiple outlets reported.

Police told WCVB that a 911 call on Sunday morning said five or six people were fighting in Saugus Stadium. The fight was allegedly between parents of the two teams, Saugus and Salem, police told WCVB. One woman was injured in the fight, but was treated for her injuries at the stadium, the report said.

The game was canceled after the fight, a statement from Saugus Youth Football and Cheer said. The town league for children’s athletics apologized to the families and players for the “great disappointments.”

“Youth sports is a place for children to learn, gain confidence, and find a love for playing the game,” the statement said. “It is in moments like this that we can reflect on our purpose as guardians and mentors and take the time to teach our children that the actions of today are not the norm and negatively effects everyone involved; most primarily the children.”

In the statement, the group encouraged parents to use this as a “teaching moment” and thanked Saugus police for their response and help.

Saugus police did not reply to a request for comment from Boston.com on Sunday.
