CHICAGO — Businesses in Chicago’s Lakeview and Roscoe Village neighborhoods are giving back to the community this week in the 17th annual Shop for Schools event.

Shop for Schools, put on by the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce, runs this week Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9-10.

Alyssa Lombardo, Events & Marketing Director for the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber, joined Jewell Hillery on Sunday’s WGN Weekend Morning News to talk about Shop for Schools.

In the event, people can go to any of the participating retailers to shop. They choose a school of their choice, then 15% of the purchase goes that school.

Lombardo said over 25 retailers and more than 20 schools from Lakeview and Roscoe Village are participating in this year’s Shop for Schools. She says proceeds help schools with things like funding scholarships and playground equipment, purchasing school supplies, and assisting students who may need basic necessities like toothpaste and shampoo.

“It’s really helping the entire community,” Lombardo says. “You don’t have to be a member of a school to donate to that school.

“… It’s a really great program. There’s so many schools and retailers involved, and we’re happy to be doing this for the 17th year.”
