A child and an adult were hospitalized early Sunday morning when a fire tore through an apartment building in Van Nuys.

According to information from the Los Angeles Fire Department, crews were dispatched to 7320 North Hazeltine Avenue at 1:10 a.m. and found the two-story structure filled with smoke.

The fire itself was located inside one of the apartments, officials said.

“Initially, several people were trapped inside,” LAFD said.  “Firefighters quickly rescued the residents and provided medical evaluations and treatment outside…two people – including one child – were transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation in unknown conditions.”

Firefighters deployed hose lines and set up blowers to evacuate smoke from the building and restore fresh air inside.

It took less than 35 minutes for 43 firefighters to knock down the blaze. The cause is not yet known.
