An early autumn heat wave shattered several California records during the event’s hottest day Wednesday.
The San Fernando Valley region was among the hardest hit with Woodland Hills topping out at 111 degrees. The sweltering high temperature knocked off the old record of 109 degrees set in 1991, according to the National Weather Service.
Two more records were set in the Antelope Valley when Palmdale hit 105 degrees, breaking the record of 101 set in 2020, and Lancaster’s 104 degrees beat the previous high of 101 back in 2012.
Also in Los Angeles County, Sandberg in the Ridge Route area recorded a high of 97 degrees, which was 4 degrees hotter than the record of 93 degrees set in 2020.
Finally, along California’s Central Coast, Paso Robles hit 108 degrees, breaking the 2012 record of 105.
Forecasters are calling for a slight cooldown on Thursday but excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are still in place through 8 p.m. for much of Southern California.
An excessive heat watch will also be in effect through Monday as forecasters monitor temperatures through the weekend.
Afternoon highs are expected to finally return to around the average by the middle of next week.
