Police shut down highway in Worcester, arrest armed suspect

Both sides of the highway near Exit 2 remain closed Wednesday evening as law enforcement investigates the incident, authorities said.

Police shut down a stretch of Interstate I-190 in Worcester on Wednesday after multiple reports of a man with a gun nearby, Massachusetts State Police said.

Troopers responded to reports of an armed man on I-190 in Worcester around 3:40 p.m., State Police said in a statement. The suspect is in custody and the scene is secure but, MSP said, the mile three marker will remain closed as police conduct an investigation into the incident.

MassDOT said at 4 p.m Wednesday that Exit 2 on I-190 was shut down.

As of 5:30, MassDOT said the road was still closed and motorists should “expect delays.”

There was a shooting in Worcester around 2:13 p.m. on Wednesday, Boston News 25 reported. It is unclear if the suspect taken into custody on I-190 is responsible for the shooting a few hours prior. Worcester police did not confirm the two incidents were related.
