National Park Service holding free bicycle tours of LBJ Ranch

JOHNSON CITY, Texas (KXAN) — The Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park is hosting free bicycle tours of the LBJ Ranch this month.

The tours will take place on Oct. 5, 19, and 26. Each ride will be six miles long and will take about two hours.

The National Parks Service shared details about the rides, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Johnson Family Cemetery, just inside the entrance gate to the LBJ Ranch.

Participants should stop at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park first to pick up a free vehicle permit and map. The visitor center will open at 8:30 a.m. The entrance gate to the LBJ Ranch can be found by driving about 1.5 miles east of the state park on Ranch Road 1 and crossing the Pedernales River. The gate to LBJ Ranch opens at 9 a.m.

The Parks Service said the bike tours will follow a six-mile loop at a leisurely pace leaving from the cemetery, traveling to the Junction School, and then heading uphill to the Showbarn at the top of the ranch before looping back down to finish at the cemetery. Along the way, the tour will make eight stops so that riders can enjoy the views and learn more about the history of the ranch and the Johnson family.

The group will be riding on paved roads, but the Parks Service said the ride is recommended for those ages 10 and older due to the uphill climb and distance. Participants must bring their own bikes (bikes will not be provided) and are required to wear their helmets. Those attending should also plan to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Reservations are not required for the event. Call the park visitor center (830) 868-7128 extension 244 for more information.

“Now that cooler fall temperatures have arrived, a bike ride is the perfect way to explore the LBJ Ranch while taking advantage of the fresh air,” said Park Volunteer Better Chambers. “Come join us and have some fun while you get your body moving.”

The next event at LBJ Ranch will be Night Skies Over the LBJ Ranch on Saturday, November 2. A full schedule of park events can be found online. All park events are free.
