Southern California braces for heat and fire risks through Thursday

US

Temperatures in Southern California will be intense in the coming days, creating dangerous fire conditions through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to peak around 108 degrees in some valleys, with fire risks heightened in the mountains, NWS said.

Heat Advisories and Red Flag Warnings have been issued for parts of the region, including the inland valleys, foothills and mountains.

Temperatures in some areas are forecasted to reach between 95 and 108 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, with minimum temperatures in the foothills and some mountain areas remaining as high as 85 degrees.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected, particularly in the interior mountains, where high wind gusts of up to 35 mph, dry fuels and hot, unstable conditions could lead to rapid fire spread.

“If fire ignition occurs, conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior which would threaten life and property,” NWS stated Monday.

Fire conditions have already led to new evacuation orders being issued in San Bernardino County due to flare ups within the 40,000-acre Line Fire perimeter.

The increased risk of fire is expected to linger through Thursday, with potential for large, fast-moving wildfires, NWS said.

Residents should stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during high temps, and monitor vulnerable individuals, including young children and elderly.

A slight cooling trend is expected to arrive by the weekend, but very warm and dry conditions may return, keeping fire danger elevated throughout the region.
