Gov. Gavin Newsom is drawing some criticism from supporters of the bills he’s vetoing after they were passed by the state Legislature.
Perhaps one of the most prominent bills Newsom has vetoed is one intended to regulate the use of artificial intelligence.
Senate Bill 1047 would have required developers to consider if their AI system could cause a catastrophe and forced them to be able to turn it off if the need arises, but Newsom vetoed the bill, noting that it’s only focused on larger AI models when smaller models, which would still be unregulated, could also cause harm.
Despite the urging of many in Hollywood, Newsom sided with Silicon Valley.
And AI was not alone in being the subject of a bill recently vetoed by Newsom.
Newsom refused to sign bills that would require speed-limit-alert devices in new cars, provide condoms at most high schools and allowed community colleges to offer bachelor’s of nursing degrees.
