Keeping our state beautiful with fall native plants

US

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Now that the fall season has started, some of you may be thinking about planting some plants and trees. One factor that could go into your thinking is about which Texas native plants require less watering.

Good thought because, after all, the Lone Star State is prone to drought.

Vernon Effenberger, an information specialist with Take Care of Texas, spoke with KXAN Meteorologist Rich Segal on the importance of making sensible choices as you consider which seeds to plant and that drought-tolerant plants are the way to go.

Some excellent choices include Cedar Elms, Desert Willows and Texas Mountain Laurels. These, and several others, can tolerate the oppressive Texas heat during those times when daytime highs get into triple digits … and rain can be scarce.

These types of trees require very little maintenance for the benefit they offer as they mature.
