Douglas County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man who had a gun and had told police he was suicidal Saturday night.
The man, who lived in unincorporated Douglas County, called Lone Tree police early Saturday evening and said he was suicidal, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a video posted to social media. Police and deputies responded to the man’s apartment complex near Peoria Street and Roosevelt Lane. Weekly said a community response team officer attempted to de-escalate the situation, and at one point, the man fired a round in his apartment.
After about an hour, the man eventually came out of his apartment while holding a gun and fired one round into the air, Weekly said. The man then turned and pointed the gun at deputies, the sheriff said, several of whom opened fire and struck the man. He was transported to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.
The identity of the man was not immediately available Sunday morning. Deputy Cocha Heyden, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said no one else was injured in the shooting. She said she didn’t know how many deputies opened fire. Deputies involved have been or will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, she said, as is department policy. The investigation will be handled by the 18th Judicial District’s critical incident response team.
