Lions Could Lose Star Defender Marcus Davenport For Entire Season After Suffering Significant Injury

The Detroit Lions won a big game on Sunday over the Arizona Cardinals to improve their record to 2-1 in the new season. The defense played a big role in the win, holding Arizona to just 277 yards total in the match.

However, within the game, Detroit suffered an injury to star pass rusher Marcus Davenport. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the injury to Davenport appears to be a serious one and he could end up the remainder of the NFL season.

“Davenport, who put a sleeve on it and tried to return, could be lost for the season. He’s currently undergoing more tests.”

If Davenport is out for the year, it would be a big loss for the Lions’ defensive unit. He provided them with another strong edge rusher to pair with standout Aidan Hutchison, giving Detroit one of the better pass-rushing units in the league.

Davenport signed with the Lions this offseason on a one-year, $6.5 million contract and was hoping for a clean bill of health. He dealt with an ankle injury last year while with the Minnesota Vikings which limited him to just four games.

Through the first few games with the Lions, Davenport registered two total tackles, with 0-5 sacks. If anything, he gave them another body that they could throw at opposing offenses so this could be a detrimental injury for Detroit moving forward.

Before he joined the Vikings last season, Davenport played a heavy role for the New Orleans Saints on their defensive front. He was taken in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. His best season came in 2021 when he posted 9.0 sacks and 39 total tackles over 15 games played.

The former product of the University of Texas, San Antonio has been in the league for six seasons and was hoping to help the Lions compete for a championship. Detroit will now likely need to go forward without him as they search for their first Super Bowl title.

Detroit hosts the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football this week, in what could be a potential playoff preview. Seattle has started the year with a record of 3-0 and could make a statement by taking down the Lions on the road.
