Teen boy shot outside Staten Island high school, NYPD says

US

Police are investigating after a 17-year-old boy was shot in the left leg just blocks away from a Staten Island high school on Thursday afternoon, the NYPD said.

The incident occurred weeks into the new school year, which began earlier this month.

The NYPD did not provide the name of the 17-year-old shot at 273 St. Marks Place, near Curtis High School. Authorities said EMS transported him to Richmond University Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, but police said a suspect wearing a green sweatsuit fled the scene on foot.

The shooting occurred a day after police found a loaded .45 caliber firearm on another 17-year-old student at that same high school, officials said. Police posted a photo of the gun on social media and described the student as “a known gang member.”

Police obtained the gun “before it entered the school,” according to a statement from NYPD Assistant Chief Joseph Gulotta on Thursday.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
