A teacher at a Greeley elementary school was arrested last week on charges alleging he strangled a 6-year-old student, police said.

Joshua David Wainscott, 40, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Weld County jail on suspicion of second-degree assault for strangulation and child abuse, according to a news release from the Greeley Police Department.

Wainscott has not been formally charged, according to court records. A filing of charges hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

On Aug. 30, school resource officers with the Greeley Police Department responded to reports of an assault against a 6-year-old student by a teacher at Maplewood Elementary, at 1201 21st Ave., police said.
