Loaded down big rig slams into pizza shop in Southern California

Officers with the California Highway Patrol are investigating after the driver of a big rig crashed into the side of a building Monday in Santa Clarita.  

Personnel with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of the crash at around 3:15 p.m. at Chi-Chi’s Pizza, located at 27117 N. Sierra Highway.  

Aerial footage of the incident captured by Sky5 showed the flatbed semi-truck, which was carrying a load of construction materials to the side of the building where extensive damage to the structure was clearly visible.

Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the crash unfolded, but Sky5 reporter Gil Leyvas noted the path the driver took off the northbound 14 Freeway, where the truck took out a road sign and narrowly missed crashing directly into the restaurant.  

It’s unclear how many people were inside the pizza shop at the time of the crash.  

Authorities said that medical personnel took one person to the hospital. There person’s condition was not immediately available, nor was it clear if the patient was the driver of the big rig or someone from inside the restaurant.  

No further details were provided.
