Vote expected on $15M in proposed settlements for more Burge victims

CHICAGO — The City Council Finance Committee will vote Monday on $15 million in proposed settlements for police misconduct cases.

The payouts stem from five lawsuits filed in state and federal courts naming former police sergeant Ronald Watts and the late commander Jon Burge.

The largest payout, more than $11 million, would be to Anthony Jakes, who spent 20 years in prison because he falsely confessed to a murder case after being beaten by Burge’s team.

Jake was 15-years-old at the time of his arrest in 1991.
