I didn’t have any friends in high school and one way I got through the weekends was to go to the video store Friday afternoons and take advantage of the weekend special deal where you could rent 10 tapes for five dollars. I devoured the movies of Buster Keaton, Orson Welles, John Ford, Jean Vigo, Judy Garland, and Robert Mitchum, but I recall a period when all I watched was Lauren Bacall.
