FBI investigating after shots fired near Trump

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Former president Donald Trump says he’s safe as the FBI investigates an apparent assassination attempt at his golf club in Florida.

Law enforcement shared photos of what they found on the scene at former president Donald Trump’s golf club in Florida.

The Secret Service says agents saw a man pointing a rifle toward the course where Trump was playing a few hundred yards away.

“Probably between three and 500 yards, but with a rifle in the scope like that. That’s not a long distance,” said Sheriff Rid Bradshaw.

The local sheriff says agents fired at the man, but he got away.

A witness took a photo of the suspect’s car and the license plate.

Deputies caught up to the man on I-95 north of West Palm Beach.

The sheriff says the man was unarmed at the time.

“We have somebody in custody right now. That is a potential suspect,” said Bradshaw.

Law enforcement is still investigating whether that man fired any shots.

The latest assassination attempt comes after Trump was shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13th.

The shooting led to changes in Trump’s security and the resignation of the director of the Secret Service.

The sheriff weighed in on the security procedures.

“He’s not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had to entire a golf course surrounded. Well because he’s not, security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible,” said Bradshaw.

Trump’s opponent in the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “I’m glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”

Former president Trump is back at Mar-a-Lago.  In an email to supporters, he said “I am safe and well, nothing will slow me down, I will never surrender.”

He called for unity and peace.

The White House said the president and vice president were briefed on the shooting.

Trump is scheduled to talk about cryptocurrency online tomorrow before getting back on the campaign trail Tuesday.
