Deputies find and rescue elderly woman, cat from Bridge Fire evacuation zone

Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department rescued an woman and her pet cat from a home within the mandatory evacuation area of the Bridge Fire, authorities said.

The rescue took place at about 10 p.m. Tuesday when authorities received a report that a 78-year-old woman was stranded in her Wrightwood home, after a mandatory evacuation order was given. The caller said the woman couldn’t leave her home and didn’t own a vehicle.

Deputies arrived at the home and found the woman inside. She was frightened, according to authorities.

After gathering personal belongings and her pet cat, deputies helped her into a vehicle and escorted her away from the danger area.

Authorities said the woman was appreciative toward the deputies and thanked them for their assistance.

Firefighters were successfully able to protect her home from the fire, the sheriff’s department confirmed.

As of Sunday, the Bridge Fire has burned more than 54,000 acres and is at 9% containment, per officials.
