A three-vehicle crash in the South Loop early Saturday morning left a 21-year-old woman dead and two others critically injured after they were ejected from their vehicle, Chicago police said.
A tow truck driver, who fled the scene and has not been identified by police, backed into a SUV in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt Road at approximately 2:15 a.m. Saturday. The SUV then struck a third vehicle, causing its driver to lose control and hit a wall, police said.
Three people were ejected from this final vehicle that hit a wall: a 21-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man. All of them sustained serious head injuries and were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
The 21-year-old woman was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.
The driver of the SUV that struck the victims’ vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation, Chicago police said.
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident.
