Decades before Eric Adams became mayor and when I was younger, the father of the noted playwright Lorraine Hansberry, a real estate agent, won a landmark decision in the U.S. Supreme Court declaring in 1940 that racially restrictive agreements designed to exclude Blacks access to housing were unconstitutional in Hansberry vs. Lee. I would later become one of Hansberry’s lawyers.
