Suffolk County homicide detectives are investigating the death of two toddlers who were pulled unresponsive from a pond behind a Holtsville apartment complex Saturday afternoon.

The sisters, ages 2 and 4, were initially reported missing in a 911 call from a family member, the Suffolk Police Department said in a press release.

Police responding to the Fairfield Townhouses at 2 Victorian Court joined good Samaritans in searching the complex. The girls were found  behind the complex in a pond by good Samaritans and were pulled unresponsive from the water at about 3:20 p.m., police said.

They were taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Police gave no initial explanation of why the incident was being investigated as a possible homicide. Still, detectives are asking anyone with information on the incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
