Star Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was pulled over and briefly detained by police while driving to the team’s stadium for their first game of the year Sunday.
Hill, 30, was pulled over for a moving violation while headed to Hard Rock Stadium, according to authorities.
Videos posted to social media showed Hill lying on his stomach, his hands handcuffed behind his back. Police sources told ESPN Hill had a “verbal altercation” with an officer, who decided to handcuff the star.
Hill was released almost immediately and finished his trip to the stadium, where he played for the Dolphins and scored a touchdown in a 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“How things escalated into the situation that they were in, in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police, is mind-boggling to me,” Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said on ESPN after the incident. “I’m deeply concerned by that. Very troubled. We will be looking into it. We will be investigating this. We will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time.”
Police leaders said they would look into the incident and review body-camera footage from the officers on the scene.
“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels said in a statement. “I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident.”
Hill has had multiple unrelated interactions with police in the past. Last year, he was investigated in Miami for allegedly striking a man during an argument, though cops never charged him.
In 2019, police in Kansas City investigated Hill for child abuse, but they did not charge him in that case, either. In 2014, while still in college at Oklahoma State, Hill was charged with domestic battery after his then-girlfriend said he choked and punched her. In that case, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years of probation.
