Evacuation orders issued as Line Fire continues to burn in San Bernardino County

Evacuation orders and warnings are in place for several Highland neighborhoods due to the Line Fire, which still continues to burn with no containment late Saturday morning.

The fire first broke out near Baseline Street and Alpin Street around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. After a period of rapid growth, the blaze stood at 3,832 acres with no containment by 10:30 a.m. Saturday, according to CAL FIRE.

An evacuation order was issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for the area of Calle Del Rio to Highway 38, which includes Greenspot Road north, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and about an hour and a half later, SBSD announced that more parts of Highland were under evacuation warnings, including from the 210 Freeway east to the foothills and from Greenspot Road north to the foothills.

The areas of Running Spring east of Highway 330 and south of Highway 18 are also under an evacuation warning as of 10:50 a.m., SBSD stated.

An evacuation shelter has been set up at Immanuel Baptist Church, located at 28355 Baseline Street in Highland.

Fire officials told KTLA 5’s Carlos Herrera Saturday that while there was not a significant change in fire behavior overnight, weather and terrain are making it challenging for fire crews to contain the blaze.

“The weather is not helping out in any way and [neither is] the steepness of the hills,” said Brent Pascua with CAL FIRE. “We have a tough firefight on our hands.”

The vegetation fire is spreading as a heatwave scorches the Southland; highs in the Inland Empire are forecast to remain in the triple digits through the beginning of the workweek.
