Don’t wait until September ends to remember Green Day’s infamous Boston performance three decades ago.
Before the “American Idiot” hit, Green Day – then known for their studio debut “Dookie” – played a free show at Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade in 1994 to celebrate college students returning to the city.
However, it quickly got out of control, and many dubbed the incident as a riot.
They played “Welcome to Paradise,” “Basket Case,” and more before being shut down and ending the concert early when the crowd rushed the stage.
Dozens were arrested, WBZ reported at the time, and the reporter went on to call the band “punk rock’s hyperactive problem children.”
