NYPD confirms it is cooperating with a federal investigation into its members

The NYPD said on Thursday that it is cooperating with a federal investigation involving its members.

The news came a day after the FBI searched the Manhattan homes of top city officials: Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright. Wright shares the home with city Education Chancellor David Banks, who is Phil Banks’ brother.

Neither the nature of the investigation nor the purpose of the raids was clear on Thursday evening. It was also not clear whether the investigation into the NYPD members or the raids are related.

“The department is fully cooperating in the investigation,” the NYPD statement said. It did not specify the ranks of the officers who are being investigated.

“The department is aware of an investigation by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York involving members of service,” the statement read.

Mayor Eric Adams has previously said he’s cooperating with an FBI probe into fundraising for his 2021 mayoral campaign. It wasn’t clear if the new developments were connected to that investigation.

A spokesperson for the Southern District of New York declined to comment.
